EMAD ARMOUSH'S DUOS
Vancouver-based multi-instrumentalist Emad Armoush teams up with friends old and new to explore soulful and inventive sonic landscapes. With clarinetist Francois Houle, violinist Jesse Zubot, drummer Kenton Loewen, trumpet player JP Carter, and cellist Marina Hasselberg.
JOSH ZUBOT STRINGS
Vancouver violinist Josh Zubot dazzled the GJF audience in 2017 with his astonishing free jazz quartet, MendHam, a rich context for his quicksilver, swinging improvisations. His Strings, featuring Jesse Zubot (violin), Meredith Bates (viola), Peggy Lee (cello), and James Meger (double bass), showcases a broader range and depth of Josh’s composing skills, deploying them to marshal the complementary improvising skills of his stellar bandmates. Episodes of vertiginous, frantic repetition segue to gently rhapsodic melodies or to propulsive, forward-charging tune material, each imprinted with Josh’s singular musical signature.

Longhand Trio
Saxophonist Peder Long was a little-known but extremely prolific composer who wrote hundreds of unreleased songs. In the mid-1980s, he mentored the now-iconic West Coast guitarist Tony Wilson, who also played in Long’s band. Decades later, Tony’s Longhand Trio has recorded a full album of Peder’s music which they’ll present alongside special guest violinists Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq) and Josh Zubot (Land of Kush).
The Zubots are remarkable talents who match traditional mastery of their instruments with wide-screen, cinematic use of electronics and extended techniques. With JUNO Award winners Russell Sholberg bass and Kenton Loewen drums, Longhand’s lyrical interpretations of Peder Long’s music border on the spiritual.
